February is World Understanding Month!

What a difference a year makes! I’m sure everyone remembers “Snowmageddon” from last year, but now we’re fortunate to be enjoying unseasonably warm temperatures. While it’s very easy just to focus on ourselves, we have to remember that there is a much bigger world out there.

As Metro Rotarians, I encourage you to think back during this month about all the things we do, and have done, that has an impact worldwide. Our continued support of the Youth Study Exchange Program and the Group Student Exchange Program are both excellent examples of how we reach out globally. I am confident that we have learned as much from the individuals we have sponsored as they have learned from us. Another good example is the number of water projects that we have assisted with financially. A special thank you to everyone who has assisted with securing and completing the paperwork and grant applications that have resulted in cleaner water to many people overseas.

This year is flying by, and I can’t believe how much we have done! Thanks for all you do to make Metro Rotary such a success!

2012 Metro Trivia Night

Metro’s annual fundraising event will be held THIS FRIDAY, February 3 at the Knights of Columbus Hall (2525 North Stadium Blvd.). Plan to join fellow Rotarians and friends for what has become a fun-filled evening of fellowship, good food and fun! Doors open at 5:45 p.m. A dinner buffet provided by Sam Bennett will begin at 6:00 p.m. with trivia starting at 7:00 p.m. Auction items will be available for purchase. If you have items to donate, please contact Marcia Machens.

Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the Douglass High School Bike Club! This is our main fundraiser for the year! Each member is expected to sell, sponsor or donate $100 for the event. If you have not picked up raffle tickets yet or indicated your commitment, please contact Les Borgmeyer as soon as possible!

January is Rotary Awareness Month!

Happy New Year! As we enter the second half of this year, I know everyone is still excited from all the wonders that the annual holiday season brings. It’s a time for reflection of the year past, but also a time to look forward at what is to come.

As we begin 2012, I encourage you to reflect on Rotary. Hopefully, you are aware of what a fantastic organization you are a part of and what Rotary means locally and internationally. As a refresher, I offer the following: in February, Rotary will celebrate its 107th birthday; there are over 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide; there are over 32,000 Rotary clubs in 200 countries; Rotary has helped all but eradicate polio; the Group Study Exchange program has helped more than 57,000 young professionals explore their career fields; and the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars program has helped more than 47,000 students from 110 countries study abroad. Rotarians make a difference!

Thanks again for the role each of you play to make Metro Rotary such a wonderful organization. I look forward to the next six months!

Metro Rotary will host its monthly fellowship social from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 5 at Shakespeare’s Pizza (225 South 9th Street).

All Metro members and friends are invited to attend! This is an excellent chance to visit with your fellow Rotarians as well as get acquainted with our new members. We hope to see you there!
