December is Disease Prevention & Treatment Month

This month Rotary’s focus is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month.  That’s an especially appropriate focus in the  year when we celebrate the Rotary Foundation’s 100 years of doing good in the world, including it’s fight to eradicate polio.

Since the Rotary Foundation began its mission to eliminate polio, over $1.2 billion has been contributed, along with countless volunteer hours, to protect more than two billion children in 122 countries.  As a result, the disease remains endemic in only three countries: Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan.

Many of us can remember friends and family who had polio, and many of us can remember lining up with families throughout our community to receive the polio vaccine when it first came out.  The near eradication of this disease is something to celebrate indeed in this season of hope.

I wish you all the best throughout the holiday season and for the New Year.
