May is Youth Service Month
This month is devoted to focusing on all Rotary activities that support the development of young people up to the age of 30. Rotary International’s programs for youth include Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Youth Exchange. These programs help young leaders build leadership skills, expand education and learn the value of service.
Metro Rotary has long emphasized the importance of educating our local youth and providing opportunities for them all. For some time, our members have worked with youth at a very early age, reading and interacting with children in local preschools through our partnership with the Columbia Public Schools Title I program. Also, our club sponsors high school students each year to attend RYLA camp which provides what is often described as a life changing leadership experience. In the past, we have sponsored several inbound and outbound high school youth through the student exchange program, and it is hoped this can continue in the future as Rotarians see the value in sharing their homes and experiences with international high school students. Finally, our ReachOut Metro program and website is expanding the opportunity for youth to connect with the community and learn from the experiences of local Rotarians. Thus, Rotary provides a framework for “building our youth for the future”.
